This collection shares some examples of nineteenth century shawls from collections across the United States, as documented by costume historian Nancy Rexford.
In over 30 years of consulting work, Ms. Rexford has developed a personal research archive that serves as an impressive finding aid to original objects that are in small collections all across the country. Her work focuses on women’s clothing in America from 1780-1930. The items represented in her archive include dresses, outerwear, underwear, shoes, hats, fans, shawls, and other accessories. The examples shown here are just a small subset of the collection, provided here as a proof-of-concept before the full project continues.
